ROLL FOR INITIATIVE! WHAT's NEW?
Greetings from troupe director Shannon!
After over a year of deep thought and opening of my heart, I have decided that the Geek Slink dance troupe will be disbanding at the end of 2018. The troupe’s final performance will take place at Geek Slink & Drink on November 13, 2018. This was an incredibly hard conclusion to come to, and while many tears have been shed this is absolutely the right direction for me as a director. There are many reasons for this.
Geek Slink as a project started years ago as a casual and fun experience for dancers that wanted to try something new, or discover something fun in a low-commitment and safe environment. Over the years, the troupe has been many things and has seen several shifts, not all of which stuck. But the goals that the troupe did meet were wonderful and amazing! The Geek Slink troupe has been a success, and every single member over the years should feel proud!
In the last couple of years, my vision for the group differed from what the members needed. I had a vision for a professional performance troupe with members that could travel occasionally, learn together, and grow together as dancers. I leapt head first into the challenge while others honored their own needs, and that is 100% understandable. But through my advances and studies, I have reached a level with my dance where I must shift the gears and place the primary focus into my own growth, study, and performance art.
While Geek Slink as a troupe is going to ride away into the sunset, Geek Slink will continue to live on in shows and workshops. The Geek Slink & Drink shows will be continuing, and have been growing considerably! I’m very much looking forward to our November show and all of the dates planned out for 2019. I adore working with Bryant Lake Bowl and I am proud to call them home for this wonderful show that has been running at their theater for 2 years.
Classes will also be continuing, and this is the most exciting part, because I’ll be expanding my class offerings in January to include two different levels! Classes will also be focused on teaching drills AND choreography, and students will still be offered performance opportunities if they would like them (and if not, they’ll have a blast in class). More information on this will be coming, but I’m thrilled to continue teaching Sundays at Open Minds Fusion Studio in Uptown Minneapolis, my shimmy-home.
And above all else, I look forward to opening my door as a teacher to allow a more relaxed and fun opportunity for new students, to place the focus on contemporary fusion belly dance and help the art form grow, thrive, and live well.
I do not want people to be sad about this. On the contrary; I want people to rejoice and be happy! This is a move toward the positive that while somewhat bittersweet for me personally, is really in the best interest of the people under my tutelage. It will strengthen me as a dancer and teacher, and will afford me the opportunity to travel more and work on my own craft. I am excited about what the future will bring.
Every story has to meet an end, and this is the end of this journey. The ring has been plunged into the fires of Mt. Doom and now we all will find our own happy endings. But when one story ends, another begins. I look forward to this new chapter, and I want to thank everyone who has been so supportive of Geek Slink over the years. Your kind words, feedback, and encouragement have been something cherished.
And above all else, I will always be humbly grateful to the members of this troupe whom I have seen grow, move, change, and evolve over the years. And while tears have been shed, I am truly grateful to all of you. You have cause today to celebrate and be proud in yourselves, because you have taught me more over the years than I could have ever asked. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Dance is my light and it keeps me going through the darkest of times. I want others to find that same feeling and joy. I know that this is the right move going forward. <3
